First Chapter Conversations

A one-hour conversation to start your teen’s money story off right.

Most families wait until move-in day to talk about money — and by then, it's a crash course instead of a conversation.

First Chapter is a private, one-hour financial coaching session designed for high school students. In this personalized session, I help your teen build a strong financial foundation by beginning their own money story—developing healthy money habits, financial confidence, and a positive mindset before college, a first apartment, a first job, or a first credit card brings real-world financial decisions. It's a proactive investment in your student's financial literacy, helping them make smarter money choices for life.

Why now, not later?

The earlier we start, the more room there is to practice. A freshman who opens a bank account and starts tracking their own spending has three or four years to make small mistakes — a fender-bender, not a major accident — while they're still living under your roof and can talk it through with you. Wait until August before senior year, and the first "real" financial decision your kid makes is also their first one alone.

What we cover

Every conversation is different, because every kid is different.

We talk about:

  • What money means to them right now - and what they’ve absorbed about it without anyone teaching them directly

  • Earning, spending, and saving - in their own words, at their own pace

  • Setting up a bank account and a simple way to track where money goes

  • What wise choices versus wish I’d done that differently actually feels like

  • The values they are carrying forward, and the ones worth questioning.

This isn’t a lecture on budgeting. It’s the start of a habit.

Who is this for?

High school students of any age, though I especially love starting with freshmen and sophomores—there's more runway to build healthy habits before they leave home. It's just as valuable for a junior or senior who hasn't had this conversation yet.

The details:

Format: One hour, one-on-one, in person or by video

What you get: A conversation your teen will actually remember, and a starting point you can build on at home and two take-home handouts — questions for kids and questions for parents — to keep the conversation going
